It’s An Emergency
In India, it’s only late nights and early mornings when we have maximum peace on roads after making exemptions of dogs our street owner and Bollywood themed loud horns of trucks and buses passing by. Later comes people and with them their favourite bad habit. But what you listen to most? Its vehicles honk, contributing to their most favourite habit that is making noise.
India is a very populated country and has one of the largest road network which is busiest in the whole world. But the quality of roads stains such fact. India is largest manufacturer and consumer market of two wheeler vehicles hence the main roads in India are under huge pressure and suffering capacity constraints. Around quarter of population lives in slum areas which are more narrow. Also now don’t miss street animals here which are our companions while on road. These can be acceptable reasons for honking regardless of a fact that I managed to ride my scooty without horn for almost a year and many people too.
People out not just honk and stop right. This is where we lose to developed countries. Honking is an emergency device in our vehicles which is very good thought of whoever invented it. It helps to warn people close to your vehicle and to get aware of approaching vehicle which might hit you if you don’t stay side. When I walk around I do notice and acknowledge the horns around me but 90% of them just add to noise pollution. Every Indian has its thumb always on horn button while biking or driving which is not a bad thing at all till you don’t keep pressing it.
People travelling on two wheelers, auto drivers and car drivers and specially bolero drivers they keep honking. The reason is not only the bad infrastructure but after several studies and research it was found it’s a behavioral issue showing the driver’s personality of being ignorant, impatient and sometimes frustrated.
Recently many NO HONKING initiatives has been taken and doctors has also warned about several adverse health effects of noise pollution to heart and hearing ability.
I have got my horn repaired some months ago after all it’s an emergency tool and not a toy to play with.
